I've been wanting to do "year in review" and "2012 goals" posts, I just took awhile getting around to it. Rather than looking at this as procrastination, I'm taking it as a good sign that I feel like I am generally headed in the right direction and not feeling the pressure of the new year/clean slate/oh-my-god-this-is-my-one-chance-to-finally-do-it-right.
That said, I do like to look back on the year and now that I actually have had some success in achieving some goals, I am kind of looking forward to setting some new ones for 2012.
In January 2011, I followed Mizfit's inspiration and wrote my goals as though it were already December 31, 2011. This was a really fun post to write and I plan on doing the same for the 2012 goals. Below is a copy of what I wrote and I have added comments as to how I did in comparison to what my goal was.
First off, I am now 100 pounds lighter [I was 99.2 pounds lighter on 12/31/11...I'm going to call this one good]. That's right, I hit the century mark as of 12/31/11. Being 100 pounds lighter feels amazing [it does]. I no longer have back pain when I walk or when I wake up in the morning [back pain is completely gone and I sleep like a baby]. I can shop and do normal everyday things without breaking into a sweat [this is one of the best things about having lost so much weight. I used to be so miserable and worn out from just the simplest things like goign to the grocery store. I used to be able to run maybe one errand and it would wipe me out for the day. No more. I go and go and go. I don't think twice about how far I may have to walk. It's a non-issue now]. My ankles don't swell anymore and even the callouses on my feet are improving [yep]. While I still have quite a bit of weight to lose, I now know I can enter a room and meet new people without feeling like they are taken aback by my size [this is true. I actually feel like I look pretty good now. I don't worry about how I appear to people nearly as much as I used to].
Being 100 pounds lighter has made me feel so much better about my appearance and as a result, I've started putting more effort into my clothes, hair, and makeup [I'm getting to be a frou-frou girl again. I like it. I've let my hair grow out. I am taking better care of my skin. I have heard many times that I am "glowing"]. I take more time in the morning making sure I look professional at work [definitely dressing more professional these days...wearing jackets and (gasp!) the occasional dress!]. Yes, I'm still shopping at the usual big girl stores, but I am no longer busting out of their largest sizes [when I started was busting out of size 26/28. Now I am wearing size 14/16 tops and 18 bottoms. I'm getting ready to have some of my better stuff tailored down so I can continue to wear it] and I have more choices because more things look flattering on me [think dresses! I love getting to feel feminine again] . I now own more than just black pants [brown, grey, blue, cream, and even some with patterns...herringbone and plaid]!
Losing this first 100 pounds has given me so much confidence in myself and in my ability to make a lasting change and to choose a healthier way of living [so true, I feel so much more calm and relaxed at this point in my journey because I know that I have the tools I need to achieve my goal and stay there. I just know it]. In prior years I agonized over my weight and doubted myself while doing nothing but gaining . But those days are ancient history now. And the best part is, I am not doing anything different that what I have always known I needed to do....eat less (and more healthfully) (with some help from my smaller stomach) and move more. Simple, simple, simple....once you get your head right, that is. And my head is definitely right. No, I am not perfect (even with my smaller stomach). But the days where I make the more healthy choice far (like reallly REALLY far) outnumber the days that I don't. And on the days that I don't, I no longer berate myself and allow it spin me out of control for days/weeks/months. I just shrug it off and move forward. And about all those years of struggling? Well, I don't regret those. I look at those as part of what I had to go through for things to finally click. It's all been part of the journey. I can see that now.
Another wonderful change I have made in my life during 2011 is that I learned to set boundaries at work. Crazy long hours, working every weekend, giving absolutely everything to my employer is done (because I quit my job and got a new one....a promotion even....and way less hours). They no longer own me 24/7, they just rent my time for a limited number of hours a week. At the beginning of 2011 I began tracking my working hours everyday so that I would be completely aware of the hours and help me to not slide down the slippery slope of excessive work again (I didn't do so hot at tracking my hours. I tried really hard to get some work-life balance at my former employer of 10 years, but I finally saw the writing on the wall and decided to move on. My last day at my old job was November 3. So I did spend most of the year still locked in this battle for balance. But I finally did what was right for me....and I haven't looked back). For the most part I worked 40-45 hours per week, occasionally as much as 50 but only when there were some really big things going down (My hours are pretty much 40 at this point. And I haven't worked a weekend since I started my new job. As for boundaries, let me give you an example....one day was scheduled to work out with my trainer at 6:30. He needed to reschedule for earlier. I knew I couldn't get there as early as he wanted to be so I nearly told him I'd just skip it. Instead, I emailed my boss, told him I had a personal appointment I needed to take care of and needed to leave 30 minutes early. How do you like me now?).
I learned that much like counting my WW Points to make sure my eating is in balance, counting my work hours helped to keep my work/life in balance too. And since I know I have a limited number of hours at the office, I spend them more wisely. I spend 30-60 minutes each morning when I first arrive at the office just planning and managing what needs to be done (I do this sometimes, but not consistently. I still have plenty of room for improvementon time management skills). Getting a grip on the day, so to speak, so that I can most effectively use my time to continue to produce the high quality work that I want to while still getting the heck out of there at a reasonable time each day. I delegate more and have increased the expectations I have for my employees and from this I learned that people, in general, will rise to what is expected of them.
I took every single one of my vacation days this year (I did) and didn't feel guilty about a single one (I didn't). I had to work consciously on this one because I do work around, with, and for, some very competitive and workaholic people and that has a tendency to rub off on me. But I was able to remind myself whenever tempted to cave into that pressure that that is THEIR choice on how they want to live their lives. I want to live mine differently. I want more in it than just work work work and now I have it. This change has probably made me happier even than losing the 100 pounds (definitely true. Now that I have more time for myself I have absolutely no idea how I was able to work the kind of hours I was working for as long as I did. It was pure insanity. And pure hell. Life is so much better now). Heck, I couldn't have lost the 100 pounds if I hadn't made this change.
I also completed my MBA in 2011 (finished in May! Yahoo!!!). I was so thrilled both with the accomplishment and with the additional time that this freed up in my schedule that I threw my very first soiree since moving to my new fabulous place back in 2009. I just had to celebrate! My good friends came and we ate, drank, and were merry (Didn't get this one accomplished as I was still working crazy hours and being beaten down by it).
There was so much good stuff in my life during 2011 that I hardly even recognize my life now compared to 2010 (and that's a good thing...a very good thing). I am healthier and live a much more balanced life (fo' sho'). I instituted "Sunday Funday" into my life (started out with this early on but fizzled out fairly quickly). This was a committment to myself to take time weekly to recharge my batteries and spend an entire day doing only things that I WANTED to do and nothing that I NEEDED to do. In committing to take time for myself, I started doing things I used to enjoy - I read 12 books this year just for the shear pleasure of it (I don't think i made it to 12, but I did read 6 books in November - December alone....the same time I started my new job. Coincidence? I think not.) and ended up joining a local book club which expanded my horizons not only literarily, but socially (Did not get around to this). I went to movies again (Lots of them). I started cooking more again and enjoyed trying new recipes every month (not really, will try again this year). I became a regular at my local farmer's market (nope, but mostly because I am using my Saturday mornings to workout with my trainer, so I am pretty OK with my choice). I reconnected with friends that I have neglected in recent years (My favorite reconnection of the year was getting to meet up with my cousin who I hadn't seen since 1995. I wrote about her and a condundrum I was facing here. I'm ashamed to say I avoided the baptism because of my weight. But am so glad we finally did get together otherwise). I booked regular facial appointments with Miracle-Worker Maria, my favorite esthetician, and my skin has never looked better (I did this early in the year...mostly for my "Sunday Funday" and then ended up going to the dermatologist who recommended acne facewash like teenagers use. My skin does look great and it only cost my $5 to wash my face for a month rather than $100 for a facial). I spent time discovering the Dallas-Ft Worth area. I was overlooking so much that has been in my own back yard for over 15 years (didn't get around to this). I experienced the joy of the lazy Sunday afternoon nap (oh yes, I did...zzzzzzzz...sleep is delicious).
I walked in the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure in Fort Worth in April just like I did last year (did not do this in April but I did do a different local 5K in December). But this time I did it without huffing and puffing and resting. No old ladies passed me by like they did last year and no one offered me their water bottle with a look of terror in their eyes that I might keel over right in front of them (you can say that again....I was a walking machine, finishing with a time of 46:10...and then I went to a session with my trainer immediately afterwards! I am a rockstar, if I do say so myself). I enjoyed it so much and it's such a good cause, that I walked again in the Race for the Cure in Plano in October (nope, just one 5K in 2011). I've even started making plans to walk the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk in 2012. (Making plans with my friend Julie to possibly do the Chicago 3 day in October. Still trying to firm up plans/committments. If we do, I will need to start training soon.) The only question is what city and which of my blogger friends can I get to do it with me? :)
I took some trips this year. In April I visited my friend Julie in KC. She just had her second baby. Last time I was there was after her first and her first is now 4 and a half years old. A shameful long time not to visit good friends, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely (had a wonderful time and her new little boy is sweet and laid back and precious. Her 4 year old daughter is a pistol and cool as hell!) I took a short weekend trip to the Texas Hill Country during bluebonnet season and came back with some beautiful photographs (did not make this happen). I took several long weekends throughout the year to go back home to Iowa and spend time with family (only once but I had my Grandpa down here to visit in November too). And I finally did something I've been wanting to do for awhile now and spent a week at the Biggest Loser resort in Ivins, UT in September. It was a great experience working hard with some kickass trainers and connecting with other similarly minded people. The hiking was amazing. Not just the beauty of the surroundings, but also the fact that I could actually DO IT (Was an amazing experience that I blogged about in September....check my list of labels lower down on the blog and click Biggest Loser Fitness Ridge to get to my daily posts from that trip)!
I love my house and this year I made it even more of the oasis that I feel one's home should be (this is still a work in progress). I finally found the perfect art piece to go above the mantle in my living room (just ordered it from art.com 2 weeks ago and am awaiting delivery). I had Kim, a decorator I know, help me do something beautiful and restful in my master bedroom. It is now a truly calming respite, just as a bedroom should be (was not able to get to this this year). Another thing I did to make my house an oasis is I spent time throughout the year decluttering and organizing (got a small start on this towards the end of the year, but still have lots more to do). I got rid of alot of stuff that I never use (lots of stuff went to Goodwill, including bags and bags of too big clothes!). I organized my home office and went paperless with as many of my bills and bank statements as I could to limit the paper that comes into my house (um....not so much. Is high on my priority list for 2012). I even got the junk in my garage out of here (I made a REALLY big dent in the garage, but still have some work to do)! It's so freeing to come into a house where the only things in it are things that I actually use and things that I love. I'll say it again. I LOVE my house. Even more now than when I first bought it. I couldn't be happier here (very true, even if I didn't achieve all my 2011 goals surrounding it).
Whew! Big year for me. But I guess you can do and enjoy more when you have the time and the health for it. Life is good. And it's only just begun. (I believe this with every inch of my shrinking body. There were some things I didn't get done this year, but I did accomplish quite a bit. The biggest thing is I have gotten my balance back, both in terms of work-life and in terms of my weight and health. With this things in check, I can't begin to imagine how much is going to happen for me in 2012. Wait, yes I can. And I am going to post about it....soon!)
Big Thanks to Mizfit for this awesome idea. I plan to make it an annual tradition!
