Impromtu Thanksgiving Post

I wasn't going to post today but after reading some other blogs and seeing how many of you are doing something athletic this morning before you begin your festivities, let me just say here and now, "As God is my witness I am doing a freakin' Turkey Trot next year." Because lying in bed reading the accomplishments of others doesn't cut it for me. My life can be different next year. It is up to me.

Thanksgiving: Learning From Last Year's Mistakes

You know, this blogging thing comes in handy after you've done it for awhile. I was just sitting here making my grocery list for Thanksgiving and trying to plan how I was going to survive it without pigging out. Then I wondered, "How did I do last year?" (Because my memory sucks!)

So I pulled up my Thanksgiving post from last year and while it sounds like I didn't do so hot at keeping it under control that day, I also posted an idea for how to do better next year, which is now this year. I love the idea and I think it will help me this year. And to think...I didn't even remember posting this!

Do you guys ever go back and read your old posts? Ever found anything that helped you that you had forgotten about? I'm thinking maybe I should re-read my old posts more often!

Weigh in: 0.4 lost, 169.2 to go

Down 0.4 pounds today. It's been two weeks since my last weigh-in so that is sort of a measly amount of weight to lose in two weeks. But when you consider that during that two weeks I traveled to a city with everything in the world you could want to eat and that Thanksgiving was a mere three days ago, I will consider my 0.4 loss a victory.

There are a lot of things I could have done differently on Thanksgiving. Like not eating to the point of physical pain would be the first and most obvious thing. I go into Thanksgiving with the best of intentions: buying just a turkey breast, making my Crustless Pumpkin Pie, skipping the things I don't really care about like dinner rolls and sweet potatoes. But still I find myself gorging myself on the things I do care about like mashed potatoes and gravy. I never make mashed potatoes and gravy so I feel like I have to eat as much as I can because who knows when I can have them again? This I read this post by Becky at Diet Coke and Zingers and got a whole new idea about how to handle Thanksgiving and the special foods that can suck us in. Next year I will do what she did and fix myself another plate but keep it for the following day. Hopefully that will assuage the feeling that I have to eat all I can that day because I won't get to have it again for another year.

That said, what is so special about mashed potatoes anyway? I could easily fix them in a healthy way using skim milk and lite butter anytime I wanted to. I think I need to change my thinking about mashed potatoes. They aren't so special.

Happy Thanksgiving

On this day of gratitude, I give thanks for:
  • A family who loves me
  • Friends I can be myself with
  • Reconnecting with my cousin
  • My supportive blogger friends
  • My sweet little dog who loves me, entertains me, and keeps my feet warm in bed
  • A job that is secure
  • Health insurance
  • My home
  • Being born in a free country
  • My body that remains healthy in spite my not treating it as well as I should
What are your grateful for today?
