Samantha's pooch?

No, I don't mean this little cutie in her matching outfit. I mean the other kind of pooch, i.e. spare tire, fat roll, blubber belt, pot belly.

I saw the Sex and the City movie again tonight (fanatical much?) and it was only on this second viewing that the whole play on the dialog "who woulda thought I'd have a pooch?" sank in. I guess the first time I was so enraptured at getting to see my four fabulous pretend friends on the big screen that it made me temporarily immune to fat insults.

Don't know what I am talking about? Well, there was a scene where Samantha shows up at Charlotte's baby shower with her new little dog in tow and sporting a stomach-bearing top. When she stepped into the room everyone was staring and she said, "I know, who woulda thought I'd have a pooch?" (or something to that effect anyway). Of course she meant her dog, but her friends could only think about her other pooch. The first time I saw the movie I totally missed seeing her fat pooch and made a mental note to pay closer attention the second time. Again, I missed it (AMC should really get TIVO). So I tried to really get a gander at the alleged pooch during the post-baby-shower scene where the four girls sat, eating cake, and discussing Samantha's "weight gain". And I am sitting there, in the front row no less, looking her up and down thinking "WHERE?!?!?!? Where's the pooch?" It must have been there because the other girls were fairly aghast. "WHAT have you been eating?" "HOW could you not notice?" I wanted to yell, "I am looking right at her stomach and I still haven't noticed!!!!!"

So basically, my question is, "WTF?" Where was Samantha's pooch? Did anyone see it? Whatever pooch she may have had must have been minuscule so why all the hub-bub? Seriously, if they want to be aghast at a pooch I should show them mine.

I have to say the pooch talk was a little (OK, alot) annoying. I'm sorry, I just can't stand to hear skinny women bitch about their fat, be they in real life or be they on the big screen. But I guess a pooch is in the eye of the beholder. My eyes? They beheld no pooch....other than the four-legged one.

Sex and the City Movie ***SPOILER ALERT***

I love Sex and the City. I have spent many a solitary Friday evening living vicariously through lives of those four fabulous New York friends. I own the entire series on DVD and have watched them through more times that I care to admit. I have daydreamed about moving to NYC and being a SATC girl too: meeting marvelous men and attending decadent soirees, gallery openings, and book parties with my flamboyant but sweet gay boyfriend or with my gaggle of impossibly beautiful, accomplished, stylish, and most impossible of all, supportive and loyal, girlfriends. Truly a fantasy life. And that is what I love about SATC, the fantasy of it. Not just the fantasy of Park Avenue apartments, millionaire boyfriends, jobs at Vogue, and a closet full of Manolo Blahnik strappy sandals, but the fantasy of having that life with great friends who truly become your second family.

So, of course, I was going to the movie ASAP!!! I went to the midnight showing last night. I can happily report that the movie did not disapoint. It might have been a tad long (did I really say that?) but it felt like I was being reunited with old friends. I nearly squealed like a 13 year old girl when the opening theme song started. I wasn't alone. The entire audience was very vocal in their reactions to the movie which immeasureably added to the experience. There was laughing, crying, gasping, and applause. It was wonderful! All throughout the movie, we would get excited and point, "Oh my God, there's Big!" "Steeeeve!" It was with glee we noticed even the smaller characters and the canine characters too. "It's Mitzy Von Muffling!" "Aww...Elizabeth Taylor!" "Scout!"

The major plot point of the movie was the engagement of Carrie and Big. While they were shopping for an apartment together, they decided in a most unromantic way to get married. The original plans were to have a small wedding and Carrie picked out a simple "no name" vintage suit to wear. Skipping the details, the plans morphed and soon Carrie was planning a 200 person wedding at the NYC public library complete with the requisite couture gown. In the end Big panicked. Carrie was left at the altar, well, at the library. We have seen Carrie heartbroken before but nothing like this. It was gut-wrenching to witness. After several months, a serendipitous meeting between Big and Charlotte just as her water breaks (but not before she got to deliver her pre-planned and rehearsed in-case-I-ever-run-into-Big line "I curse the day you were born!") eventually led to an encounter between Carrie and Big. He ended up proposing, she said yes, and they married in a small civil ceremony at the courthouse. Yay, everyone was happy. Except me! I was still pissed at Big for jerking her around yet again. I suppose over time and with more viewings of the movie I will come around. But I was not ready for Carrie to forgive Big for yet another jerk-you-around heartbreak. I guess they thought the movie was already nearly 2.5 hours so they didn't want to spend more time on it but I just wasn't ready for forgiveness. I always have been more of a Miranda anyway.
